Joseph Update #3

As of 4:30 pm, Monday, Joseph is resting in ICU with relatively good vital signs. Here are some updates:

A comparison of the 2 CT scans shows improvement in his condition, meaning less blood in the body cavity and around the kidney. Surgery to remove the kidney is looking less eminent, and the surgeons view that as a last measure to save him from excessive hemorrhaging.

He running a slight temp, perhaps indicative of a bacterial infection in the blood that is in the body cavity outside of the blood vessels. He is on Tylenol, and antibiotics through the IV.

He is allowed to have a small clear liquids diet, which makes him slightly nauseous

His next test (hemoglobin) is ordered for tomorrow AM, a big change from every three, then every 6 hours. They must think he’s in good enough shape to “hold” with a count of 7.2 without ordering a transfusion.

Susan will likely go back for a short evening shift, and Kelvin will stay home to loadout turkeys all night. The neighbors are taking the kids to the Assemvblies of God church’s Fall Festival, as well as out to dinner. What a deal!

We trust in you, O LORD, we say you are our God; our times are in your hands. Psalm 31:14

Joseph Update #2

Joseph is in a holding pattern right now. He is still in the Intensive Care Unit at Rice Memorial Hospital, so we are not allowing any visitors at this moment.

Here is the update as follows (as of 12:00 p.m. CST on 10/31/05):

  • He will have a CT scan at 9:30. We are waiting for the results.
  • His vitals are stable.
  • His urine output normal.
  • His pain is moderately controlled by morphine.
  • His color is improving.
  • A blood draw at 2 p.m. will determine the extent of his internal bleeding.
  • We expect to hear more from the doctor late afternoon.

    Joseph in ICU

“They always said you should try out the other side of a “first responder”/EMT call…” quipped Joseph from his bed at Rice Memorial Hospital. Around 4:45 PM on Saturday,October 29th, Joseph fell about 4 feet from a combine platform, taking the whole impact on his right side. He worked another half hour or so and determined he had better go home. Mom found him prone on the living room floor and asked what happened to you? He mumbled something about “blunt trauma, lower left quadrant.” Thankfully,he also supplied the translation, and with the help of his first aid flip chart, we determined that an abdominal injury required transport. Kelvin and Susan drove a very painful Joseph to Renville County hospital’s ER, where our family practice doctor met us. X-rays revealed no broken bones, but no other clues as to the extent of the internal damage. He was given a pain shot, and sent home, with specific things we were to watch for.

After sleeping an hour or so, Joseph began vomiting, and later passed large quantities of blood in his urine. We then contacted the doctor again, who requested an ambulance transport to Rice Memorial in Willmar. Over one dozen first responders and EMT’s from Joseph’s two companies answered the page for a 21 year old male with suspected internal injuries.
Joseph’s younger siblings sat on his bed to get a closer look at the proceedings.

At the hospital, a CTR scan was ordered which revealed a “cracked kidney” surrounded by a bulging blood-filled membrane. Since the bleeding was literally contained, surgery was put on hold. Joseph spent a quiet night in ICU, with blood levels monitored every 3 hours to check for continued bleeding.

This morning we were making progress, which appeared to be lost by late afternoon, as temp, heart rate, BP and pain levels all increased. More morphine is helping the pain, as well as the multitude of prayers going up from friends and family. Joseph’s hemoglobin levels were the only thing dropping, from 14 (normal) to 11.5 to 11 to 9 by 3:00PM. Another blood draw was requested at 8:00, with the “number to beat” being 9. Joseph squeaked by with a 9.3, his first upturn.

This BLOG is posted so that you can find out what’s happening. We’ll try to keep it updated. Many have already come to visit, and even more have called. Such an outpouring of love! and yet, we had to request a “no visitors” order by Sunday evening as both Mom and Joseph were getting stressed. (Kelvin spent most of Saturday night at the hospital, tonight he’s up loading turkeys, so Susan went this evening, and the kids knew how to hold down the fort.

This morning I asked myself the question, “why did you let this happen, LORD?” I believe He answered, “Ask why is that ALL that I allowed to happen…”
I know the plans that I have for you, says the LORD…plans for good and not evil, to give you a future and a hope! Jeremiah 29:11

    Joseph to move on..and out!

On October 28th, Joseph’s 21st baptism birthday, the family honored his entry into a new stage in his life journey. With a few house-warming gifts we celebrated his transition to Flock Manager (as soon as Kelvin is finished loading out all those turkeys) and his move into the now vacant trailer home next door. This was scheduled for early/mid November, at which time he and Kelvin will be “king of the hill” together on Crown Farm. Joshua hopes to join him over in the trailer home in early January 2006.

    We’re Back!

For those of you that tried to visit our website during the past few days, you might have seen an “account suspended” page. This is because our blog was recently “attacked” by referrer spam.:(

    Definition of Referrer Spam:
Referrer spam is a kind of search engine-targeted spam. The technique involves making repeated web site requests using a fake referer url pointing to a spam-advertised site. Sites that publicize their referer statistics will then also link to the spammer’s site. This benefits the spammer because of the free link, and also gives the spammer’s site improved search engine link placement due to link-counting algorithms that search engines use.

Why was this so bad? Well, these spammers were not only effecting our bandwidth usage (how many page loads per month we’re allowed, etc.), they also caused a heavy load on our web host. That was the main reason our account was suspended. Our web host was able to block spammers, and enable our account again.:)
